The Prep Department consists of four year groups: Year 3 (7 - 8 years), Year 4 (8 - 9 years), Year 5 (9 -10 years), and Year 6 (10 -11 years). There are 4 classes in each year group, with an average of 16 pupils in each class
In Year 3 the children are largely taught in their own classroom by their own class teacher, but go to other areas of the school for specialist teaching such as Music, Art, D.T., Textiles, Food Technology, Physical Education and ICT.
Year 4 maintain strong classroom links, with all our form teachers taking at least one core subject. During this year, we offer slightly more specialist subject teaching, making the most of our staff's expertise.
The children in Years 5 and 6 are much more independent and receive specialist teaching in all subjects, within dedicated subject classrooms. This has always proved excellent preparation for the transition to senior school.
Children in Year 3 finish the school day at 4.00 pm. There is, however, provision for them to stay at After School Club until 5.00 pm, which is particularly helpful for those who have older siblings in years 4 - 6.
Lessons for children in Years 4 to 6 finish at 4.00 pm, but homework is set in the core subjects on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and for other subjects on Fridays. We offer the facility of a supervised homework club in school from 4:15 - 5:00pm for those children whose parents find it more convenient to collect them later. There is a playtime between the end of lessons and the start of homework club, with juice and sandwiches provided for the children staying until 5:00pm.
On Wednesdays children in Years 4 to 6 are invited to attend an enrichment club. The clubs are hugely popular and include options such as SCRATCH (computer programming), Gardening, Archery, Laser Tag, Chess, Fencing, Music Technology, Snorkelling, Mandarin and more!
