School should not only be somewhere a child attends, but also a place where they feel part of a community and have a voice in what goes on. The School Council at Chandlings is a democratically elected group of students who represent their peers in making Chandlings the best it can possibly be. It aims to enable pupils to become partners in their own education and to make a positive contribution to the school environment .
One pupil and a reserve representative are elected from each class from Year 2 to Year 6. School Council meetings are held each fortnight and the councillors represent the views of their class. Two members of staff, Mrs Brawn and Mrs Greig represent the chair person and secretary.
To date the Chandlings School Council has been active in:
Improving playground facilities by introducing an Indoor play area
Providing feedback and suggestions about food, extra curricular activities, homework, the playground and sport
Replacing the school bag in the Prep department with a backpack
Designing a brand new diary for the children in the Prep department
Persuading the games department to allow girls and boys to try out each other’s sports
Working with the games department to improve Sports Day
