The House System

Pupils in Year 6 put themselves forward for election as Captains and Vice-Captains. Having described why they would make supportive and encouraging leaders, the pupils in each House vote for their preferred choice.

The strength of the house system at Chandlings is the huge number of opportunities it offers all pupils to get involved. House Points are earned everyday during class time for very good pieces of work, a great effort with work and contribution to class discussion. If a pupil produces an outstanding piece of work, the teacher can nominate the pupil for the Excellence Book. This is an award given by the Headmistress who sees the piece of work and invites the pupil to come to her office to talk about the effort that went into producing it. The pupil gets to sign the Excellence Book which is on display to the school, stand up in assembly to be congratulated and gets 10 House Points!

There are also awards given by the Deputy Heads for great progress in a subject, good manners and consideration for others. Each of these awards gets 5 House Points. Although House Competitions are prominent and numerous throughout the year, it is the daily collection of House Points that will ultimately decide the winning House at the end of year.

The aim of the House system is to encourage all children to get involved in as many of the House events as possible and to have a variety of events that allow pupils to display their talents. The competitions are keenly contested but always in the right spirit. Pupils learn important life lessons in dealing with winning with humility and dealing with losing with renewed determination. We feel confident that we have continued to do this. We look forward to next year when no doubt there will be new ideas for competitions that will excite the imagination of the pupils.
